2013 Free Agents of interest – Part 13 – Sammie Lee Hill , DT

Sammie Lee Hill – DT: 6’ 4’’, 329 lbs, 26 y/o, 4th season, was drafted out of Stillman University in the 4th round in the 2009 draft by the Detroit Lions.

Sammie Lee Hill is a mountain of a man nose tackles that is buries in the Lions depth chart. In front of him there are Suh, Corey Williams and Fairley. It is to be said that Hill, Williams and Fairley ended up on the Injury Reserve in 2012.

Hill showed his skills back in his rookie season, when he constantly collapsed o-linemen letting other teammate to tackle the ball carrier. He’s absolutely a very good run stuffer but up to 2012 didn’t show much of pass rushing ability.

His career stats in regular season games as week 17 of 2012: he started 18 games out of 59 regular season game he played in; amassed 95 total tackles (57 solo and 38 assisted), he recorded 4 sacks, 3 pass deflections and 1 forced fumbles.

Why the broncos would be interested:

  • The Broncos will be looking for defensive tackles in the free agent market. Bannan and Vickerson will be free agents coming March, as well as Ty Warren, even if the latter is said to be thinking on retirement.
  • The Lions have multiple starters to re-sign on defense (Corey Williams, Lawrence Jackson and Cliff Avril on the D-Line) so they could look to keep one of the defensive ends more than Williams or Hill (since Fairley and Suh are not Fas).
  • He could be looking for relocating to another team and have to opportunity to create his own role (starter on 2 downs) after four years of bench and the Broncos does not look like having a star duo of DTs at this point as Suh and Fairley looks to be in Detroit.
  • He could be a not so expensive addition that could play the part of Bannan in the running plays.

Why the Broncos could not pursuing him:

  • The Broncos are not clearly playing a nose tackle in their scheme. This could be because they play their player strengths or because they don’t have a real dominant nose tackle.
  • They could be more suited on bringing back Bannan because of leadership, since he played fairly well in 2012.
  • The Broncos have to make tough call on their own free agents (Clady will require to eat up most of the 18 M cap Denver has). Hill could be too expensive comparing to other strategic option (linebackers or re-sign Denver own veteran for depth).

Sammie Lee Hill could bring a really good run stuffing ability to a Broncos D-Line that looks thin at the moment. He also is only 26 y/o and could be looking for a short time contract and playing time, to prove himself and then make big money on the market. Free agent market for DTs is really deep in 2013 so he could not find a big money offer and chose the best place where to prove him. If the Broncos would be interested, there is no better place now for a free agent DT than Denver. Denver needs to add some big body for stop the run. Hill is a veteran with game experience that could come to Denver with a little investment.
